My HRM teacher’s mission during his career was: get the right people in the right place at the right time 👥.

In the world of soccer, it is almost always about big names combined with large sums of money.

That sometimes seems to be the case in the world of marketing as well, the focus is often on big companies and big budgets.

Yet it happens more often than you might think that small companies with relatively small budgets win out over these big companies by being smart.

To stay in the world of soccer, José Mourinho, coach of Porto around the early 2000s had to assemble a team.

In doing so, he looked not at the number of titles or the amount of international experience players had, but at the psychological profile.

He wanted a team of local unpolished diamonds who had heart for the club and possessed a certain competitive spirit, aggression and willingness to sacrifice themselves for the team and the club.

When he saw that the team he had assembled had the right connection with each other, with even 2 captains awarding each other the captain’s armband because they felt the other was better, he knew he had nothing to worry about.

Against the odds, Mourinho managed to win the Champions League title for Porto with this team.

The key lesson from this story: you don’t have to have the most resources, you have to make sure you are gathering and deploying your resources better than your competition.

Where do you focus in making budget allocations? Is it on the big (way overpriced) international players or the unpolished diamonds? 💎
